Weapon of choice: Drums.
Also known as: "Bowldy" (obviously!), "Rancore" (one of my imaginary friends on tour), "The Widow" (still a mystery to me, really), "Fister" (another imaginary friend who's got one hell of a voice).
How did you end up in the band? Through supporting Pitchshifter in the last band I was in, Stimulator. We split up and I filled the vacancy.
If you weren't in Pitchshifter what would you be doing? Drumming for another band! Or just what I do now, writing my own stuff.
If you had to be any other member of the band, who would it be and why? Mark, because he is so chilled!
How do you prepare before a gig? A few stretches, loads of water, and about 10 shits!
What's the first album you owned, and what's the last album you purchased? The first album I owned was Ride the Lightning by Metallica (I used to be a speed metal freak!) The last album I bought was Toxicity by System of a Down.
Last great book you read? I don't have the time or patience to read fictitious [sic] books. The only books I tend to read are boring ones like manuals, the last being Macromedia Director 8 (a cracking good read, I might add!), or the occasional music magazine.
Three things you couldn't live without? Well I suppose all vital organs to begin with, followed by my family, and then of course my passion for music.
Three things you could live without? Portobello mushrooms (the last one of these I attempted to eat looked like a racing horse's tongue), War, and snobbery.
Your choice: the contents of your wallet or the contents of your refrigerator? My wallet: student card, £20 note, credit cards. What did you expect, a bouncy castle?!
Biggest misconceptions, both about the band and you personally? When you're in a band, the old cliché has got to be screwing everything and anything that moves or breathes. Total rubbish. I, for one, am married along with lots of other people in bands who prefer a secure relationship. If I worked in a bank I think I'd be more likely to sleep around. As for me personally, no one has ever commented because no one can ever see me. So I suppose I have been misconceived for being invisible!
People or organizations who are, or have been, influential visionaries to you (musical, literary, artistic, political, social, etc.). Musically and artistically my biggest influences have been Dave Lombardo (killer drummer) Nine Inch Nails, Faith No More, Massive Attack, Zeppelin. I could go on forever. I hardly ever read so that rules out literary influences, and I find politics boring. Life is my biggest influence -- it's as simple as that.
Absolute must have's while on tour: Surgical spirit to keep my hands in one piece.
Pitchshifter has one simple rule while on tour: make it to your bunk before passing out and you're home free -- fail to and you're fair game for any number of embarrassing shenanigans. Who/what is your favorite tour story involving this? Probably when our tour manager copped it and mysteriously gained a coleslaw toupee. Then when he eventually fell into his bunk, was confronted by one of Mark's socks filled with Stilton.
What would the title of your yet-to-be-written Pitchshifter tell-all literary masterpiece be? J.S. Clayden: The Sheriff Reveals All.
Your favorite recipe? Chilled monkey brains followed by cockroach au chocolat.
What has been your best experience while in the band? Recording P.S.I.
And the worst? Farting crew.
20 years from now, what do you want Pitchshifter to be remembered for? Making great music.
