With instrument-as-catharsis, not instrument-as-entertainment, free jazz veteran David S. Ware personifies an ideology first explored by John Coltrane. On his 13th release, Corridors & Parallels, Ware attempts to push the genre even further, and eP's Eric J. Iannelli is there for find out why. The Fartz' relentlessly driving guitars and guttural vocals defined a hardcore sound that has since become legendary. With an EP of new material due out in December, Steve Weatherholt recently caught up with members of this legendary Northwest hardcore band.

For about two months now, I've carried my Discman only in my living room and only in the mornings when I'm getting ready for work. I shave to Coltrane, while my apartment, and seemingly the rest of the world, is still asleep. The razor seems more dangerous, but all the cooler. I know it sounds like an adolescent fantasy, but an indulgence this early in the morning seems healthy. Besides, that's what a Discman's all about; it's a passport to your own private Idaho, a license to be an obstinate music snob who refuses to share his music and listen to others.
